Nairobi Change Initiative Training

Project Description and Results:

Background: The Strategic Leadership Centre International, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, provides solutions to the strategic challenges facing companies through the application of the global best practice (world-class) strategic and leadership techniques. In order to provide world-class Management Training and Business Advisory Services to their clients, they have entered into collaborative relations with international consultants whose expertise has proven to assist companies increase market share and profitability.

Their global alliance of international partners includes professionals and consultants and trainers with extensive first hand-hand experience in leadership, business management, strategic human resources management, and executive development.

Miller Consultants is in the process of becoming a global partner with the Centre.  As a first step, Kathleen Miller traveled to Nairobi in April of 2006 to conduct a seminar on Leading Change.  She used the tool kit Organizing: Launching Organization Initiatives Series for this seminar.  The participants included executive teams from banks, insurance companies and publishing houses in Kenya.  She used one of a series of Change Initiative tool kits developed by Miller Consultants as the foundation for the seminar.  She also offered participants coaching through technology-based media as they take the tool kit back to the work place and use it.

Scope of Work:  Miller Consultants will work with the Centre to focus on the following areas of need:  Leadership and Change, Performance Management,  and Business Strategy.  Miller Consultants will partner with the Strategic Leadership Centre to offer Management Training and Business services to companies in Kenya, and other African countries such as Uganda and Tanzania over the next few months and years.   The next step for Miller Consultants will be to offer a seminar on Developing Strategic Training Systems as part of the Performance Management focus.  Once again, we will use our Outsourcing Training Tool Kit to organize the training.  We will continue to offer follow-up services to the participants after the seminars to assist them in using the tools that we provide in our training.  Eventually, we plan to work with the Centre to provide company-specific consulting assistance.

Evaluation:  Those who participated in the first session in April of 2006 gave very positive responses to the material, the delivery and the discussion.  Kathleen Miller has heard from several of them via email subsequent to her return to the States.  They indicated that they found great value from the sessions.  They also indicated that they were looking forward to future work with the Centre and its partners, including Miller Consultants. 

Results: Those participants who have contacted Kathleen Miller have indicated that they are finding the material to be useful already.  For example, one participant stated, “I fill enriched with knowledge and ideas on change management after the interesting sessions we had with you. I have also started looking at things very differently and that we should differentiate between resistance and ambivalence. As we progress on the structural changes that we intend to bring about we will apply what we learned and may seek your guidance where not clear. We hope to have another interesting session in the near future.”
